Police departments across the country post every night to remind people to do the 9PM Routine.
The 9 p.m. routine is a nightly reminder to residents to remove valuables from their vehicles, lock their vehicle doors, lock the doors to their residences, turn on exterior lights, and activate all alarms and security systems. Law enforcement believes following this routine will make it harder for criminals to burglarize vehicles and homes.
At 9 p.m. every day, you should:
Lock all vehicles, residences, garages, windows, gates and sheds.
Secure or bring inside your tools, bikes, keys and other valuables.
Activate exterior lights, security cameras and alarm systems.
If you observe any suspicious activity, contact your local police department.

The idea of "9PM Routine" is to encourage people to take a few simple steps every night at 9 p.m. to help prevent theft and keep their homes and vehicles safe. Burglars are criminals of opportunity. The easier it is to burglarize your home without getting caught, the more likely they are to commit the crime. If you make burglarizing your house a bit more difficult, you reduce the likelihood of your house getting hit.
